This is a follow-on to a previous test:
Link: Test of top irons

This is a test of the game's top "slow swing bar" irons.

I wanted to investigate further the "distance accuracy" of CTL Legacy and eLord irons, using the same 7 iron as the previous test. Why? Well, I was sort of taken aback by the inaccuracy of the CTL Legacy club. I had read in these forums a few months ago, people saying "Hmmm.. I hit the CTL and for no apparent reason it comes up short." I had played with them myself and hit a perfect shot on a par 3, only to hit 3 yards short of where I expected to be.

Anyway, I thought it was worth investigating in a more rigorous fashion. As I have stated many times, I do not care what the results are -- they are just pixels to me. I do care that I move beyond the anecdotal; beyond opinion.

For this test, I saved the images of all the perfect hits. I post a link to these images below.

For fun, I threw in the Tempest 7i. All clubs in this test were unfitted. All hits were at 25 degrees in the range. All hits used the same stats:

Power 35, Impact 46, Stamina 8, Skill 196

A total of 25 hits were recorded for each club. 9 of these were perfect 100% and 0% hits, verified to the pixel with a screen magnifier. The remaining hits were perfect 100% hits, but were not at the 0% pixel. We recorded 4 hits at each of +1 pixel (1 pixel early), +2 pixels, -1 pixel (1 pixel late), and -2 pixels.

All testing was performed using a screen resolution of 1024x768.

Here is an illustration of the pixels around the 0% pixel:

Results

Here are the results of the test:

Code:
Most distance-accurate for perfect 100%/0% hits:
#1      Tempest          0.59% variance (vis a vis avg distance)
#2      eLord              1.03%
#3      CTL Legacy      1.48%

Most distance-accurate overall (all hits):
#1      eLord             0.99% variance (vis a vis avg distance)
#2      CTL Legacy     1.19%
#3      Tempest         1.42%

The accuracy is based on the variance, a statistical measure of dispersion around an average. The Excel VAR() function was used to calculate variance. You will see in the following data how we arrived at these variance results.

Here is the data for the CTL Legacy 7i__________________
Code:
Avg distance perfect hits       280.5 (hits exactly at 100% and 0%)
.........Minimum distance        277.6
.........Maximum distance       282.7
....................Range              5.1y
....Range as % of average     1.82%
........0% Stat. variance         4.2y
.Variance as % of average     1.48%

Avg distance of all hits         280.0
........Minimum distance        276.5
........Maximum distance       282.7
...................Range              6.2y
...Range as % of average     2.21%
..Overall Stat. variance         3.3y
.Variance as % of average    1.19%

As you can see, for the CTL, for perfect hits, we had a large range of 5.1 yards from shortest to longest. The variance of 1.48% for perfect shots is a little disappointing to say the least. I like CTL clubs. They are fun to play with. However, one could not claim that they are accurate.

Here is the data for the eLord 7i___________________________
Code:
Avg distance perfect hits       265.3
.........Minimum distance        262.8
.........Maximum distance       267.1
....................Range              4.3y
....Range as % of average     1.62%
........0% Stat. variance         2.7y
.Variance as % of average     1.03%

Avg distance of all hits        264.6
........Minimum distance       262.4
........Maximum distance      267.1
...................Range             4.7y
...Range as % of average    1.78%
..Overall Stat. variance        2.6y
.Variance as % of average   0.99%

The eLords are a tad more accurate than the CTL. Is it enough to decide to use eLords over CTL? Probably not.

Here is the data for the Tempest 7i_________________________
Code:
Avg distance perfect hits       259.8
.........Minimum distance        256.8
.........Maximum distance       260.8
....................Range              4.0y
....Range as % of average     1.54%
........0% Stat. variance         1.5y
.Variance as % of average     0.59%

Avg distance of all hits        259.0
........Minimum distance       255.2
........Maximum distance      262.2
...................Range             7.0y
...Range as % of average    2.70%
..Overall Stat. variance        3.7y
.Variance as % of average   1.42%

The Tempest are excellent when hitting 100%/0% -- very little variance. However, they are the most inaccurate when missing 0%, as witnessed by the variance% of 1.42% for all hits.

Raw Data

And finally, here are the actual hits recorded for each of the clubs. Listed is the distance and the pixel hit around 0%. As per above, there are 25 hits for each club. All hits are exactly at the 100% pixel and vary only in what pixel is hit around 0%.

Hi, I'm a Lvl.102 user from Korean server. I always enjoy your posts.

I was wondering what CTL clubs were. From your posts, they appear to be superb clubs but unfortunatley we don't have such thing in Korean server.

Are CTL clubs repairable? How many fitting slots do they have? Where do the clubs come from? Item mall or golden boxes?

CTL Legacy clubs come from boxes -- typically gold boxes. The come in both non-repairable and repairable versions. All have 8 fitting slots.
